LEMOORE, Ca. — Glover Teixeira and Jorge Oliveira helped provide some early fireworks for Palace Fighting Championship 6’s “No Retreat, No Surrender” at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino.
The pair of light heavyweight mixed martial artist gave a stare down to remember, virtually butting heads at Wednesday’s weighins at the Den sports bar.
Teixeira, who fights out of Arroyo Grande, will carry a 4-2 record into Thursday’s showdown with Brazil’s Oliveira (2-1-1).
“Glover Teixeira versus Jorge Oliveira is a UFC caliber fight,” Palace Fighting Championship president Christian Printup said. “Some people don’t understand how big of a fight this is. This is the type of fight that could happen on the biggest stage in the sport.”
After both fighters weighed in, a fierce stare down ensued with each fighter inching closer to the other and neither giving any ground.
“I know he’s done kick boxing and I’m looking for some good stand up and he’s a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt,” Teixeira said. “I don’t care about that, though, I’m a black belt, too. Belts don’t mean anything. He’s a decent all-around fighter. I’m going to do what I do best and hit him hard in the face.”
Teixeira is one of two men that has defeated Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (4-2). Teixeira defeated Sokoudjou in just one minute, 41 seconds by technical knockout at World Extreme Cagefighting 24 in October 2006 at the Palace.
Meanwhile, Oliveira hasn’t fought since June of 2006 when he fought to a draw against UFC vet Marvin Eastman (14-7-1). Oliveira holds a submission victory over Mike Van Arsdale (8-5), a loss to Justin Levens (9-8) and a win over Shonie Carter (38-18-7) — all UFC veterans.
“The fight will start standing and I want to try and stand and get the knockout in the first or second round,” Teixeira said.
PFC 6 is completely sold out. It’s the 29th consecutive MMA event to sellout at the Palace, which is widely recognized as the Central Valley’s home for MMA.
“I couldn’t be happier with this card,” Printup said.
Printup also put together three PFC World Championship fights — featherweight champ Shawn Bias (12-5) of Oroville meets Oakdale’s Art Arciniega (3-1); Porterville bantamweight champ Shawn Klarcyk (6-1) takes on Oakdale’s Rolando Velasco (4-0); and Lemoore lightweight champ Poppies Martinez (14-3) battles Atlanta’s Diego Saraiva (9-6-1).
Everyone made weight on the 16-bout card, which also features a heavyweight showdown between UFC vet Brad Imes (10-3) of Sacramento vs. Coarsegold’s Anthony Ruiz (19-10).
Also on the card;
— Fresno lightweight Casey Olson (5-1) vs. Anaheim’s Scott Brommage (1-2)
— Lemoore welterweight Andrew Martinez (4-0-1) vs. Taft’s Doug Hunt (3-2)
— Santa Rosa middleweight Nate Loughran (6-0) vs. Fresno’s Richard Montoya (6-3)
